Abstract

Informal settlements, colloquially referred by many pejorative names and associated with Roma people, represent a peculiar socio-spatial phenomena. While being very noticeable by a majority of population, many aspects of social life inside them remain to be invisible. Lives of their older inhabitants, as well as the very concept of “elderness” is one of the least know among these features. Poverty and everyday-life hardships, together with specific beginnings of individual’s life stages and circles (employment from an early age and entering into marriage) cause distinct definitions of “being old” ‒ someone can be perceived to be “an elder-one” as early as in their 40s. This is only the beginning of numerous discrepancies felt by these people in theircommunities and in broader society, especially in legal sphere.
