Abstract

Ecological tourism in protected areas requires the visitors to act in a more disciplined manner than at other tourist destinations. They have to be aware of the importance of protection and sustainable use of environment and to have the knowledge about essential ecological processes and natural values. The implementation of precautionary measures is the most efficient way to prevent the deterioration of protected habitats and their endangered wildlife from the risks caused by tourist visits. The authors of this paper critically analyse current legal framework of the Republic of Serbia pertinent to various aspects of ecological tourism, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages and suggesting potential steps for its improvement. Moreover, they suggest introduction of a new term “eco-tourist” i.e. the visitor of protected natural sites who, as the holder of specific rights and obligations, is expected to possess a special permission or approval to perform certain activities on these areas, issued by an authorized state body.
